(Ontario) Filling a Methadone Prescription Without Carries

When Methadone is prescribed without carries, the prescription is filled using the same steps as a regular narcotic prescription. Since a dynamic quantity mixture is being used for the Methadone, the quantity being dispensed in the prescription will reflect the number of milligrams of Methadone.

To fill a methadone prescription without carries:

  1. Create a new or refill prescription using the Methadone dynamic quantity mixture (eg. Methadone 10mg/mL Solution in Tang).
  2. If this is a new prescription, enter the appropriate quantity authorized in the QA field.
  3. In the Qty field, enter the number of mg of Methadone that will be provided with each dose.
  4. Enter the remaining prescription information (SIG, days supply, V/W, etc...).

  5. The ingestion date defaults to the current date. If today is the correct ingestion date, skip to Step 10. If you need to modify the ingestion date, proceed with the next step.

  6. Press the Rx > Methadone. The 'Methadone' window opens.

  7. Press the Clear Days button located beside the Ingestion Date calendar.

  8. On the Ingestion Date calendar, highlight the date the Methadone will be ingested by the patient.

  9. Press the OK button.

  10. The screen returns to Rx Detail. Continue to fill the narcotic prescription as usual.
